The term Russian Front was used by the Germans much the same as British

Officers would use the term "Glasshouse"
The Glasshouse was an institute where the worst of the bad boys of the British Army were sent for punishment. I have seen men who, on returning from the Glasshouse were a shadow of their former selves.

So too the Russian Front was like a hell on earth to most Germans and their allies who served there. With sub zero temperatures, food and supplies not guaranteed, and inadequate clothing the German soldier was wishing he was anywhere else but the Russian Front. One of any soldiers most dastardley sins is desertion but the Germans could not even do that, because there was no where to go.
